NEW DELHI: India has signed a double taxation avoidance agreement (DTAA) with Thailand to increase investment in both the countries.

This was among the five agreements signed in Bangkok on Monday, following the Joint Commission meeting, chaired by Thai Deputy Prime Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The DTAA was signed by both the ministers.

“We have signed a very important MoU today on double taxation avoidance agreement, which is going to help our investments,” secretary (east) Anil Wadhwa told reporters.

Besides, India and Thailand also exchanged the instruments of ratification for the extradition treaty.

“And the extradition treaty, because it will go into force from today onwards, will mean we can directly approach the Government of Thailand and vice-versa,” he added.

The treaty provides the framework will help in the expedited extradition of fugitives, as well as, strengthen the relationship between the two law enforcement agencies by providing a firm legal basis for their bilateral cooperation

Wadhwa informed that the Joint Commission meeting took place after a gap of three years this time due to the changes in government, especially in Thailand.

He said that the meeting of the Joint Commission has given an opportunity to review the relationship between New Delhi and Bangkok ranging from the commerce and industry investments to culture.

“And anything that has been pending from some time, by way of MoUs, something we could not pay attention to for some time has all been taken into account during this meeting,” he said, adding that the discussions over the last two days have been excellent.
