KOCHI: Right from the time when he was in school, George Alexander Muthoot, Managing Director of Muthoot Finance, was involved in family business, as it was “part of life”. This continued when he joined St Thomas College, Kozhencherry for BCom. “The practical experience helped me to secure first rank in BCom in Kerala University in 1975,” George Alexander Muthoot, Managing Director, Muthoot Finance narrates his early days.

Now he is on the lookout of good start-ups ideas to invest in. “If I come across a good start-up idea, I am open to investing. But, the issue is that I could not assess the potential of the idea by myself. Now I am on the lookout for a suitable person who can evaluate such ideas.”
Muthoot Finance was originally formed as a financial services firm by the name M George and Brothers. George Alexander officially joined the company as a lower-level clerk in 1978. He is a chartered accountant by profession and a first rank holder in Kerala for CA and 20th rank holder nationally.

“By 1979, all three brothers (M George, M Mathew and M Thomas) were separate and Muthoot Finance, Muthoot Mini and Muthoot Pappachan Group were formed. Till then, we had only branch in Kozhencherry and we started to open branches. In 1990, we became a non-banking financial company and in 2011 we were listed in stock exchanges. All these have increased confidence of customers,” says George.

A lover of badminton, George Alexander, now 62, has been playing the game for 25 years. “As a routine, I used to play badminton from 6 to 8 in the morning. This has been the practice for over two decades. Reading is my other interest and I like fiction novels. I also watch comedy movies in Malayalam and Hindi. Travel is my other passion. I would like to visit places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Allahabad etc often. I also love to visit the US and the UK,” he says.
