Nano to be reborn in green avatar?

MUMBAI/ DELHI:  It’s unofficial, but the world’s cheapest car, Tata Nano, appears to be on the road of no return, with production slimming down to just one car last month. Its makers Tata Motors, which exported none, but managed to sell a piffling three Nanos back home last month, however, did not make any formal announcement on stopping the production line yet. Reports also indicate that the home-grown version of the ‘people’s car’ will be re-introduced as an electric car in the quarters to come.

In a late evening disclosure to bourses on Wednesday, Tata Motors disclosed that there were no exports of Nano in June, as against 25 units that it shipped during the corresponding period last year. Likewise, in terms of production, only one unit was produced last month as against 275 units a year before.

Domestic sales stood at three units this June, compared to 167 units in the year-ago month. “One of the important reasons they haven’t fully stopped the production, is obviously to launch Nano in a new avataar,” Puneet Gupta, associate director, IHS Markit, told Express.
