Indian stock markets witnessed a positive closing trend on Thursday, 29 October 2026. The BSE Sensex closed at 74,151.04, gaining 905.01 points or 1.24% during the session, supported by buying interest in utility stocks and select large-cap shares. Nifty50 closed at 22,936.75 on October 29, 2026, up by +237.90 points (+1.05%) from its previous close of 22,698.85

The overall investor sentiment remained cautiously optimistic amid mixed sectoral performance.

Market participants continued to monitor global economic developments, crude oil price movements and geopolitical uncertainties. Attention also remained focused on the US Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision and its potential implications for global financial markets. Despite the positive close, external risks continued to influence investor sentiment.

Sensex, Nifty rise in early trade on Reliance buying, foreign inflows

"Indian equities extended their recovery and the Nifty closed firmly above 22,900, converting the previous session’s banking-led resilience into a broader rally," said Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, a SEBI-registered Research Analyst firm.

Radhakrishnan added that the principal trigger was the Federal Reserve’s decision to keep rates unchanged without signalling an immediate additional increase, while the US 10-year Treasury yield’s retreat toward 4.9% reduced some of the valuation pressure on equities. The breakout above 22,800 subsequently encouraged short covering and strengthened the advance, he said.

According to him, banks and financial services provided the main support, with Bank Nifty closing strongly near 54,900 as buying broadened across the sector. FMCG and IT stocks also advanced, while autos, commodities and select infrastructure-related stocks underperformed as elevated energy and input costs continued to weigh on sectors sensitive to rising operating expenses.

"The recovery was supported by a broad-based rally and sustained buying across banking and financial stocks, alongside FMCG, realty, and media," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm.

The India VIX declined by over 6% to around 15.1, signalling easing volatility expectations and improved investor confidence amid the broader market advance, he added.

Thursday's session was closed on a firm note, although sustained market momentum will depend on domestic economic indicators, corporate earnings, foreign investor activity and developments in global markets, said another stock analyst, who is associated with a foreign brokerage seeking not to be identified due to his company's policy.
