“RANGASIRI UMASRI”, a four-day theatre festival featuring film actress and theatre person Umasri in lead roles, will begin at the Ravindra Kalakshetra on December 11, presenting the talented actress on stage to the Bangalore audience. Umasri is more identified with films here, although her career began with theatre, and her heart still remains there. The festival has been specially organised for Umasri by Bhagavatharu, a cultural organisation, against the backdrop of the artiste winning the national award for best actress, for her role in the Girish Kasarvalli film, “Gulabi Talkies”.
As much an attraction as Umasri will be the plays and the troupes staging them.
Chandrashekhara Kambar’s popular political satire, “Harakeya Kuri”, directed by R Nagesh, will be the inaugural play, put up by Rangasampada, one of the older amateur theatre troupes. Next comes “Bus Conductor”, directed by B R Arishinagoodi, for the Karnataka Kala Vaibhava troupe. “Odalaala” follows on Dec 13, to be presented again by Rangasampada. The play deals with the plight of Dalits, their lifestyle, and caste discrimination, and is regarded as one of Umasri’s most powerful portrayals.
Mahadeva is a leading figure in the Kannada literary field, his award-winning “Kusumabaale” considered as a classic in Kannada.
Dec 13 will also feature a seminar on “Women and Theatre”, at 10.30 am, which will look at the presence of women in amateur and professional theatre, and modern theatre among others. A highlight of the last day will be a bit piece from the play, "Ramayana", when Umasri will don the role of Anjaneya.
This will be preceded by Rangageethegalu by Shanthakumar.
Tickets for the plays, beginning at 6 pm, are priced at Rs 50.
