BANGALORE: Rajarajeshwari Nagar, popularly known as RR Nagar, begins with the ‘Arch’. The ‘gate’ is situated on Mysore Road beside and over a water body that carries Bangalore’s sewage to a treatment plant at Mylasandra.

The water body was once the Vrishabhavathi River.

On one side of the Arch, is a newly-constructed shopping mall; complete with multiplexes, a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant (not an outlet), a Mc Donald’s and a Coffee Day among other blessings.

Enter, and you will see trees and greenery. Very beautiful, it is; until the road narrows and you find your car almost sandwiched between shabby, dilapidating buildings. People stay here. The Karnataka High Court has ordered for demolition of these structures. Although there is a temporary stay, Pattanagere Road will be widened.

For now, most people don’t go that far. Residents and their guests turn left to a road that leads to a Foodworld and more greenery. This is the Ideal Homes Layout. There are beautiful houses here; many have gardens.

A short way off is the BEML layout, 5th stage. Visitors to Rajarajeshwari Nagar invariably turn right to go to the famous Rajarajeshwari Nagar Temple.

The area derives its name from this temple, which was built in the 1960s. Since then, beautiful temples have been constructed here.

Many celebrities live in Ideal Homes and the BEML layouts.

National Award winner B Jayashree, Sandalwood star Darshan, television actress Malavika Avinash and Yadunandan of ‘MTV Rock On’ are some famous residents. Darshan’s popularity is rivaled only by the grandeur of his Hummer.

There are numerous engineering colleges. The palatial Global Academy of Technology (owned by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president DK Shivakumar), RNSIT, JSS and SJBIT are among the most conspicuous.

The Ideal Recreation Club, Best Club and the Shakti Hill Resorts promise to sweeten your hours of leisure.

Lack of proper infrastructure

The area is still developing.

Srinivasan, owner of a stationary shop in BEML layout, said the area lacks adequate public transport facilities. “There are not enough buses to different parts of Bangalore,” he said, and called for increased police vigilance.

A retired government employee, who did not want to named, alleged that there is a land mafia-controlled by local politicians and influential developers- operating in the area.

Many parks, but no playgrounds A few young men complain that the local administration has converted most playgrounds into parks. “We hardly have any place to play cricket. There are parks within 50 metres of each other,” said 23-year-old Mukund. He added that they would stage a protest on the premises of the Rangamandir soon.

If you are travelling on Mysore Road, and if you have the time, please enter the Arch. There are sparrows here. RAJARAJESHWARI NAGAR, popularly known as RR Nagar, begins with the ‘Arch’.
