65,000 students to appear for COMED-K

BANGALORE: Around 65,000 candidates have registered for the undergraduate entrance examination conducted by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K).

The test, scheduled to be held on Sunday, will be held across 97 centres across the country -- 77 in Bangalore, and 20 outside.

The examination will determine admissions to seats in private engineering, medical and dental colleges. As on date, 611 medical seats, 704 dental seats, and 11,294 engineering seats will be available through COMEDK.

Under the seat-sharing agreement with the state government, 38 per cent of seats under medical colleges, 45 per cent of seats under dental colleges, and 25 per cent of seats under engineering colleges are being offered through COMED-K.

As usual, the number of students from outside the state is much higher, with nearly 50,000 non-Karnatka candidates from outside the state, as against around 1 5 , 0 0 0 f r o m t h e s t a t e .

This is typical as most Karnataka students opt for seats through the state run Common Entrance Test (CET).

The breakup of applicants for the various streams are as follows: 43,294 for engineering, 14,869 for medical/dental, and 6,466 for all three streams. The test will be held in three sessions -- a combined test for physics and chemistry, followed by separate examinations for biology and mathematics.

The postponement of the Common Law Admission Test has come as relief to students who have applied for both CLAT and COMED-K examination, as both examinations were scheduled to be held on Sunday.

CLAT on May 31 The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), which was postponed, has been now scheduled to be held on May 31. It may be recalled that it emerged that sealed and locked steel boxes carrying the test material had been tampered with on its way from Hyderabad to Lucknow, The boxes were being delivered from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad by Blue Dart courier services from Lucknow via New Delhi.

According to a statement on CLAT’s website, the examination will be held between 3 pm and 5 pm, with the test centres remaining the same. Students have been instructed to use the admit cards.

For candidates appearing at Nalanda Open University in Patna, they have been instructed to appear at Magadh Mahila College, North Gandhi Maidan, Patna.

Investigations on the tampering have been taken up by Uttar Pradesh STF. The police have already questioned officials of the courier company.
