BANGALORE: Old Hindi music lovers in the city will be in for a treat today at the B R Ambedkar Bhavan on Millers road. Fans of legendary singer Mohammad Rafi can dwell over his often termed irreplaceable magic. Octogenarian music composer Ravi Shankar Sharma, also known as Bombay Ravi, will be the special guest at the event where members from ‘Baar Baar Rafi’, a fan club based in the city, will go down the memory lane with Rafi’s songs.
The musical evening is being conducted in association with the band ‘Sound of Music’ and Mumbai-based singer Srikanth Narayan will be the voice of Rafi at the event.
Bombay Ravi is a well known name among Hindi music enthusiasts and has composed songs for Rafi in almost every movie he took up for compositions. “I composed my music and songs keeping him in mind; he was someone who has motivated generations of music directors and singers and I am one of them,” he said.
Ravi gave music for many famous Hindi films like Ek Phool Do maali, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Waqt, Gharana, Neel Kamal, and China Town. He is also popular among Malayalam music fans for famous songs in at least 16 of the old Malayalam movies.
The songs saagarangale and aa raatri maanju poyi from the movie Panchgani, sung by Yesudas and Chitra were hits.
Ravi was conferred the best song composer award by the Kerala government for his compositions. Ravi is known as a composer who has brought forth eternal melodies sung by Rafi.
“There are hymns and nakhras that I have not been able to sing as per their original composition, despite having been practicing for the past 40 years,” Narayanan said. He has been practicing hard and is hoping to relive the magic of the famous ‘Rafi-Ravi’ duo.
