BANGALORE: A function called Kanasu Nanasu - was to be held at Ravindra Kala Kshetra on Tuesday to commemorate the 70th birthday of music director C Ashwath who passed away in Bangalore on Tuesday.

The Swamiji of Suttur and Virendra Hegde, among others were expected to attend the function.

Velu of Lahari Audio Company said that no singer can replace Ashwath in Sugama Sangeetha. “Ashwath has contributed a lot to folk songs and expressive poetry. Ashwath’s demise is a great loss for music lovers not only in Karnataka but also abroad,’’ Velu added.

Recalling his four-decade-old association with Ashwath, director Nagabharana described Ashwath’s death as a great loss to Karnataka. “I had the privilege of working with Ashwath in seven films. He was a great dreamer. It is very difficult to have such a person who contributed a lot to folk music,’’ said Nagabharana.

His rendition of Kodagana Koli Nungithaa, from ‘Santa Shishunaala Shareefa’ stands out and deserves appreciation.

His programme `Kannadave Sathya’ which became a huge success in Bangalore and Mysore, was attended by more than one lakh music lovers.
