BANGALORE: The Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) Industrial Estate is one of the most neglected places in Bangalore city. There are around 40 ancillary units employing hundreds of people.
The estate was meant to accommodate ancillary units of the HMT. There were no infrastructure problems while the HMT was doing well, but now, the estate looks like an abandoned child at a remote area.
A mere glance at its entrance indicates the status of infrastructure inside the estate.
The pothole-ridden road makes you think twice before you enter.
The roads need immediate attention of the authorities concerned. There are no street lights and vacant places are full with overgrown weeds.
“People from nearby areas dump garbage here. The HMT management used to maintain it well when the company was doing good. Now, no one is interested in providing the infrastructure here,” said an ancillary unit owner on the condition of anonymity.
The estate has no water facility and the overgrown weeds have become a nuisance for the people. “The weeds have become a brooding place for insects,” said Nage Gowda, an employee. B S Rama Rao, Chairman, HMT Ancillary Units Entrepreneurs Association has said that it would be a great help for the entrepreneurs if the authorities concerned, do something to improve the infrastructure.
“I came to know that HMT has paid property tax to the BBMP,” said Rao.
Meanwhile, an official from Hindustan Machine Tools said that most of the ancillary units are not manufacturing goods for the HMT. “I don’t think that HMT management will provide basic infrastructure at the industrial estate,” said the official on the condition of anonymity.
