Kid-friendly walls, comfy and durable seating, perhaps even oversized sofas. These are some of the images that come to mind when one thinks of the TV room. While the focus is on watching TV, it should double up as a multi-purpose room whereby the family gets together and watches TV, while there’s also scope for playing games.
While planning a TV room, here are certain factors which can be taken into consideration. Storage space is essential to stack knick knacks like DVDs, toys, games and books. Smaller shelves are required to store remotes and gaming controllers. Always remember, it’s necessary to measure the size of the TV so that it fits the entertainment area, besides leaving room for installing the TV. If space is a constraint, you can conceal the TV in an entertainment centre with doors.
Depending on the amount of space available, you can decide whether there’s enough space, viewing distance and above all, enough money for a home theatre entertainment. Surround speakers give a theatre experience. It’s not a bad idea to soundproof the walls.
If space is an issue, you can have a functional home theatre in a space which is also meant to be a living room. It can be achieved with planning. You will have to design your home theater system around your room. In that case, it’s also worthwhile to consider inbuilt cabinets.
You could consider an all-in-one home theater system complete with a DVD player, surround sound decoder, amplifier, and speakers. These come with audio and video connecting cables. Home-theater-in-a-box solutions are optimized for smaller spaces. Again, if it’s a small room, make sure you opt for compact satellite speakers instead of the bulky ones. Viewers can save on floor space by choosing the LCD-Plasma TVs which can be mounted on walls.
But if it’s a dedicated space for a TV room, then choose a big screen TV, but take into account the viewing distance as well as the number of people that may be watching at any one time. Go for the biggest screen your room layout, viewing distance and budget will allow.
Many designers believe that it’s necessary to make it beyond a TV room. Regardless of whether you call it the living room, family room or TV room, it should be welcoming, kid-friendly and should be a place where all the members of the family relax over a flick or two. Floor pillows or gaddis are also great for relaxing. Since it’s a place where the family gets together, it’s nice to
include one or two family portraits.
