BANGALORE: Thirteen children from the interiors of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan underwent successful heart surgery at city-based Fortis Hospital.

Sixteen children were brought to the hospital for treatment. Three of them were not operable and had to be sent back, Dr Joseph Xavier, Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon at the hospital, said.

"People still have the myth that only certain age people can be operated, but this is not true. We have operated successfully on a child who was just sevenmonthsold. If not treated on time, the chances of the patient getting cured will be lost", Dr Xavier said.

Father Chinnappan, Sneha (a Bhopalbased organisation working for poor children) and a Germanybased foundation ENR have been working jointly to sponsor the children's treatment.

Atik Khan, whose 10yearold daughter Amreen was detected with a hole in her heart, said they came to know about their daughter's condition four years ago. He thanked Father Chinnappan, because of whom his daughter was fine now.
