BANGALORE: The special court on Thursday awarded death sentence to eleven members of the Dandupalya gang in 14 cases of dacoity, rape and murder.

The 34th citycivil and sessions judge, H R Srinivas, awarded death sentence to all the accused.

The Dandupalya gang was notorious for having terrorised Bangalore with cases of robbery, rape and murder.

With this verdict, a decadeold cases against the Dandupalya gang members have come to an end.

Among those sentenced to death were gang leader Dandupalya Krishna alias Krishna, Hanuma alias Dodda Hanuma, Munikrishna (son of Muniyappa), Venkataramana, Timma alias Koti Timma, Venkatesha alias Chandra, Munikrishna alias Kirshna, Nalla Thimma alias Thimma, Chikkamuniyappa alias Muniyappa, Krishandu and Lakshmi (wife of Dodda Hanuma).

While awarding capital punishment to the accused, the court observed that the accused committed brutal murders that were considered among rarest of rare cases in observations made by the Supreme Court and the High Court.

Many women were raped and killed by the accused, the court observed, adding that circumstantial evidence and recovery of articles from the accused have proved the crimes.

The gang members slit the throats of their victims to kill them.

Police nabbed the gang members between 1999 and 2000 under the leadership of the then joint commissioner of police Suresh Babu.

Chalapati was the investigating officer in this case.
