BANGALORE: The state government has issued a final notification declaring Gandhi Krishi Vignyan Kendra (GKVK) as a bio-diversity heritage site.

The notification comes at a time when the faculty and the administration of the college were locked in a legal battle with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for making a road through the campus.

In July this year, the university revoked a permission granted to the BBMP for building an express road through the campus to link Yeshwanthpur with Yelahanka.

Later, in the same month, a single judge bench passed an ex-party decision allowing construction of the road through the campus to provide access to the Judicial Layout, which again bisected the university campus.

The students and the faculty opposed it claiming that they would threaten the biodiversity of the campus.

They even appealed to Governor H R Bharadwaj to intervene.

The new notification was issued on September 2.

On condition of anonymity, a senior official of the UAS said the notification will act in their favour since the areas declared as heritage were where the roads were being constructed.

He said though the court has given an interim order and asked the secretaries of forest and agriculture departments and the BBMP to submit a comprehensive record, the final notification will act as a deterrent.
