BANGALORE: Rowdy Venkataswamy alias Pedda Gunda was shot dead by the Central Crime Branch police in Rajagopalanagar police station limits in the wee hours of Saturday.

According to the police, the deceased was a rowdysheeter, who has 14 criminal cases pending against him.

According to inspector Lokesh's statement, the incident took place near Priyadarshini handloom factory, Peenya 2nd stage. Lokesh was informed by ACP Hadimani that Gunda was riding a bike and was heading towards the handloom factory road. When the team reached the area, a speeding motorcycle was ahead of them. When the rider saw the police vehicle, he tried to escape but the speeding bike skidded. However, the alert rider managed to flee leaving behind the pillion rider.

The police identified him as Gunda and asked him to surrender. But, according to the police, Gunda removed a pistol and fired. The bullets hit head constable Krishna on his leg. Lokesh was forced to fire two rounds of bullets at Gunda as he continued firing at the police. Meanwhile, Hadimani and his team covered Gunda from the opposite side. When Gunda tried to fire at him, the ACP fired back, Lokesh said in his statement.

This incident happened at about 2.55 am and the police rushed him to Victori Hospital and at 3.55 am, the police were informed about Gunda's death. The injured constable, Krishna, was admitted to a nearby hospital. Rajgopalanagar police have registered a case.
