BANGALORE: Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) for industries may become a reality if Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) gets an allocation of 700 MW from the Bidadi Gas Project which will cost `7 per unit.

Managing Director of BESCOM P Manivannan said this during an interaction organised by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) on Tuesday.

"We are discussing a possibility of an allocation of 700 MW from the Bidadi gas plant which will guarantee uninterrupted quality power to the industries," Manivannan said.

The proposed Bidadi project with a total capacity of 1,400 MW initially will have four generating units of 350 MW each while the gas will be provided by GAIL through the LNG terminal in Dhabol to Bidadi. The project is expected to start generation in 2012.

"The generation cost of this power, however, would be `7 per unit. Therefore,we have initiated talks with the industries and if they agree to pay `7 per unit, we would move a proposal to the government to purchase power from Bidadi Bidadi Gas Project," he said.

Further, he said that if industries agree to pay the high rates, BESCOM is also ready to even enter into an agreement with penalty clause drafted by industries,to haul BESCOM, if it fails to provide uninterrupted power.

Smart grid

Manivannan also informed that the `100 crore pilot smart grid project which is to be implemented in Electronics City will take at least two years.

However, he promised that within two years, BESCOM will be able to provide uninterrupted efficient power for all the consumers in and around the city, once smart grid along with the distribution automated system and the gasbased

Bidadi power plant is established.
