BANGALORE: On Friday afternoon, Bangalore could become the first city to set two precedents: first, the probable mayor Sharadamma's husband could be the defacto mayor outside the council and the second, probable deputy mayor will be more powerful than the mayor within the council.

Added to this, candidates for the posts will be assuming the top jobs even though they are first-time corporators.

Sharadamma may not be highly educated, but politicians can exude their other abilities as education is not a criteria. Her husband, Ramanjaneya, appeared to be in 'Mayor mode' already. When The New Indian Express tried to contact Sharadamma, Ramanjaneya answered on her behalf and said the 'new Mayor' would like to pursue the development of the city.

"Her main areas of focus would be Solid Waste Management and solving the water issues," he said.

Deputy Mayor's merits

Candidate for deputy mayor's post, Harish, is an engineer and has made quite a name for himself even though this is his first stint as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) corporator.

As the president of the BJP Yuva Morcha and a member of the Standing Committee on Major Works, Harish has time and again made his point heard amongst his party seniors. Harish, from the Devanga community, was also instrumental in getting the GKVK Campus link road project reviewed.

Though the names were finalised late on Thursday, the fight for the posts went on till the very last minute. Roopa Ramesh was a top contender for the mayor's post, while Shakambari Nagar corporator Somashekhar and Byrasandra Corporator N Nagaraj was fighting for the deputy's post.

Election to Palike standing panels challenged

The High Court admitted a writ petition filed by Peenya Industrial Area Corporator Thimmananjaiah challenging the elections likely to be conducted to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Standing Committees on Friday.

Thimmananjaiah has contended that the elections are being conducted to the standing committees even before the completion of their one year term. Justice Ravi Malimatta issued notice to the BBMP. The results would be subjected to the outcome of this petition.
