BANGALORE: India’s most ambitious project, the Unique Identification number or Aadhar, may have received a jolt when Union Home Minister P Chidambaram stated that the Biometric census done by the authority did not clear the security criteria. Notwithstanding the statements and concerns surrounding them, registrations in Karnataka have risen sharply for   the same.

According to the Department of IT/BT and e-governance of Karnataka, there is a sharp rise in registration in the state in the recent months. “There are over 1 lakh people registering for the Aadhar number everyday”, MN Vidyashankar, Principal Secretary of the IT/BT department said. Speaking to Express, he stated that the controversies surrounding the project had not deterred the people from registering and over one crore cards were issued. Allaying any claims of complaints or fraudulent receiving of the card with the help of bogus documents, he said that there was no room for such errors in the project.

“So far we have not received any such complaints over the issue of Aadhar numbers”, Vidhyashankar asserted. Deliberating on the fact that the Department of IT/BT were only implementing the project, he said that any such complaints can be communicated with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). He also said that two cities, Mysore and Tumkur, were 100 per cent complete with registrations but the due process of issuing of numbers would be done by the UIDAI. He also shared that the project had enabled them to create the Karnataka Residents Data Hub which would enable for a uniform data base in the state. This would help for standardisation and authentication purposes across all departments functioning in the state.  He said that the same would be ready along with their scheduled completion of registrations in the state.
