Kynkyny Art will present Elsewhere, an entrancing new show featuring the works of four exciting artists — Manish Moitra, Rameshwar Singh, Sachin Jaltare and Sujata Achrekar.

On view at the city-based Kynkyny Gallery from December 19 to January 7 this inspired show pierces the veil between the concrete and abstract, and known and unknown realms, and explores the subterranean worlds of myth, fable, memory and fantasy.

Moody, atmospheric and dreamlike, Kynkyny Art’s latest show plunges through the elusive states of memory, myth and postmodern fantasy.

The vividly symbolic mixed media works piece together a haiku-like narrative that is hypnotic, non-linear and rendered with a delightfully contemporary twist.

Bits and pieces of the artists’ personal unconscious, fragments of inner dreamings, visions and other ephemera collude to create a world suspended halfway between deeply introspective states of mind and three dimensional reality, and past tense and current sensibilities.

Manish Moitra’s works convey a very current aesthetic which is at once playful and sophisticated.

This emerging artist with a degree from the Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, makes paintings in the vein of traditional miniature paintings.

But instead of Rajput and Mughal figures, palaces and gardens, his acrylics-on-canvas typically feature cross-sections of urbane and hip red homes pictured in all their intriguing minutiae.

Rotund, heavy-lidded figures in blue, green and yellow fill Rameshwar Singh’s arcane paintings.

The Rajasthan-born artist’s complex compositions feature an abundance of figures, symbols and subtext.

Jigsaw pieces of mythological heroes and heroines like Krishna and Durga are embellished with eclectic symbols like grandfather clocks, gramophones, horses, tigers and parrots.

At a glance, Sachin Jaltare’s haunting mixed media works feature wispy shadows and silhouettes of beautiful women and sculpted men.

But look closer and the phantom figures transform into passionate, charged figures locked in a sensuous duet in the midst of faraway, nocturnal landscapes.

Mumbai-based artist Sujata Achrekar’s acrylics-on-canvas straddle the traditional with the edgy, the sacred with the human and oldworld sentiments with innovation.

Featuring prominently as part of her oeuvre are compelling close-ups of Brahminical faces smeared with holy ash and vermilion, set within a highly textured, abstract matrix of religious imagery and fragmented motifs of gods and goddesses.

Collectively, ‘Elsewhere’ celebrates the lingering presence of myth, mystery and magic in modern life.

The works create a free-floating realm which does not obey the laws of time, space and gravity, but choose to explore contemplative states of longing, wistfulness and whimsy
