Fair, beautiful and slim girl needed for a homely boy. Cast no bar.  The only requirement is that the girl should be ‘fair’ and beautiful.  Well, we all read similar ads every Sunday in the matrimonial section. Cast and community have now been replaced by skin colour and beautiful features.

For some it really doesn’t matter if their would-be-bride is educated or not, but should definitely have the perfect nose. With technology you can literally change your identity on the outside.  With a lot of tele soaps on bridal grooming becoming popular, more and more tobe- brides are going the surgery way to look perfect on the D-day.

Dr Udyashankar, plastic surgeon throws light on the rising trends these days.  “Most of the girls come to get a surgery done when they are looking for a boy.  The most common surgeries include nose job, acne spots, breast enhancement and reduction and liposuction.

The most popular surgery is breast enhancement,” he says. He adds that in most cases the girl doesn’t tell the boy about the surgery after marriage and this leads to a lot of complications between the couple.

“I always tell my patients to inform their future husbands about the surgeries.  But in many cases the spouse is kept in dark,” he adds.  Sometimes the surgeries go wrong and the results are disastrous.

“In case of breast enhancement, there can be many adverse affects on the woman’s health after marriage,” he explains.  Many women go to doctors with their favourite movie star’s picture and ask the doctor to make them exactly like the women in the photograph.

“A lot of women come with unrealistic demands.  Once a women came with a picture of Aishwarya Rai and asked me to make her exactly like the actress,” he says.  City Express spoke to a few future brides and found out their side of the story.

“I have had sleepless nights stressing out about how things will turn out on my big day,” says 26-year-old Sridevi, a marketing executive.

There is something more than mandaps, elaborate invites, themed decor and the exotic cuisine which Sridevi is worried about and which is going to cost much more than all these.

She underwent a cosmetic procedure and feels that it was the best thing she has spent her money on.  “I went through a skin tightening procedure. I was obese earlier and months before the wedding I lost oodles of weight.

But, after that the stretch marks looked ugly and my skin started to sag.  I also went through blemish and scar removal treatments because my skin had a lot of marks,” laughs Sridevi.

Another plastic surgeon Dr Priyadasrshan said that he gets at least 2-3 women everyday who want to undergo a surgery before their wedding day. “The trend has increased in Bangalore.

People have become more conscious of their looks and want to look the best on their wedding day,” he says. He also feels that with the growing demand for beautiful brides, women are forced to head towards the surgery room.

So what leads a woman to spend lakhs of rupees on procedures that can be risky, and often cost far more than her wedding dress? Defending her decision Shweta, another bride-to-be says, “I went through a facial correction procedure and a tummy tuck.

And if you have the money, then why think twice? You don’t get married everyday right? And the complications arise only in a few cases. So, I don’t think it is really risky.  One of my friends also got her breasts enhanced and that made her feel much more confident about her appearance.”
