After 97 years of its inception, Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP), the representative body of all Kannada-speaking people, has planned to set up a committee to revise its voters list.
The premier Kannada organisation, established in 1915, has more than 1.2 lakh members. However, since its inception, no efforts were made to revise its voters list. Express had highlighted this in its report ‘KSP Saddled With Outdated Voters List’ on April 16.
Speaking to Express, president of the Parishat Pundalika Halambi said, “The Parishat is inching towards its centenary celebrations. The voters list has not been revised all these years. There is a need to revise it now. A committee will be formed under Assistant Commissioner and Returning Officer of the Parishat S T Mohan Raju to look into this issue.”
“According to my knowledge, more than 10,000 to 12,000 names in the list might be deleted once the list is revised. It is a long process and may need at least one-and a half years,” Halambi observed.
Elections are conducted in the Parishat once in every three years and the voters list should be revised every three years. But even after repeated alerts from its election officers, the Parishat and its office-bearers have not made any attempts sto revise the list. The list still includes names of many persons like former Mayor and Parishat President G Narayana and MLA K M Krishnamurthy who are no more.
The committee will coordinate with the presidents of the taluk and district level units and will visit the list of members falling in their areas to find any change of address, deaths etc. In case of deaths, it will be intimated to the concerned tahsildar who will confirm the death of the member by issuing a certificate, based on which the names of those will be deleted.
There are some members in the list, who have more than one membership, which will be deleted after revision, Halambi explained.
