A few well-known pooches of celebrities have made headlines in the past few weeks. But how exactly did these dogs get their names. It may be surprising, but more than half of all pet names are either human names or nicknames. People largely name their animals as they would name themselves. Another fifth of names are based on the pet's appearance or personality. A black cat becomes 'Blacky' or 'Midnight', and an active dog 'Comet' or 'Dash'.

While a few of them are influenced by movies in naming their pets. For instance, 'Bella' has topped the list of the most popular female dog and cat names for several years running, all thanks to a heroine of the same name in the 'Twilight' series. When it comes to kittens, 'Simba' became one of the top male cat names with the release of 'The Lion King'.

Most of the celebrities have named their pets in a very fascinating way. Bollywood super star Amitabh Bacchan has named his pet pooch, 'Shanouk'.

Bengali bombshell Bipasha Basu is so attached to her Chihuahua named 'Poshto' and is ready to leave behind her money for him.

Koena Mitra has a fetish for her pets named 'Cookie', 'Jerry', 'Jiggy', 'Missy' and 'Fluffy' whom she calls 'the 5 Angels'. The 'Anarkali' girl Malaika Arora Khan has a Daschund named 'Coco'.

Stay away from Fardeen Khan's dogs. They are named 'Tiger' and 'Gunda'! Esha Deol's pet pooch is called 'Piccola' and Manisha Koirala's Persian cats are - 'Mischief' and 'Morgan'.

Upen Patel has a pet pig named 'Romeo'.
