

It is that time of the year again when Sishya School, Adyar, is decorated in blue and white and children from all over Chennai throng the sprawling campus. Yes, it is time for the famous Sishya Fete, which is conducted by the school at the end of June or the beginning of July, every year.
Sishya Fete is an annual event that has been taking place for close to 30 years now. Students and parents, from all over the city come to entertain themselves at the various food and game stalls put up by the students of the school. Open to students across the city, the fete manages to entertain children of all ages.
“It is the initiative of the Parent Teacher Association. They take up the responsibility and bring the children together. It is basically a bonding session for the parents, teachers and students,” said Omana Thomas, principal of the school.
Puja Gupta, president of the PTA, says they are expecting more than 4,000 people this year. “All stalls were sponsored by parents and money is not the motive for us. We just want the children to have fun,” she said. Gupta added that children who win games are given attractive prizes.
This year the fete is expected to have several food stall like pizza, fruit shop, ice creams and several game stalls. Apart from this, the fete will also have a shoe and garment sale.
“All parents who work in the export line contribute towards the sale,” said Gupta. “All these items will be sold for Rs 100,” she added.
The highlight of the fete is the raffle draw that has attractive prizes which include tickets to Colombo, iPad, Canon camera and mobile phones. The fete will also see a Sishya memorabilia stall.
For students, this is one of the days they look forward to. Hriday Gupta, a Class 7 student said that he is so excited about the event that he is not being able to sleep properly.
“The school is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year so all our decorations will say 40,” said Gupta.
This year the fete will take place June 30 between 3 pm and 7 pm with an entry fee of Rs 50.
