Bangalore Traffic Police launched a new campaign on Friday targeted at increasing awareness amongst citizens about ambulance priority in the city.

The campaign will be spearheaded by Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade and will look at educating people about providing way to ambulances in the city.

“In Bangalore, the response of citizens when they hear an ambulance is not satisfactory.

The golden hour is important to save a life, unfortunately, ambulances are not given right of way.

We need to solve this problem,” said Dr M A Saleem, Additional Commissioner Traffic and Security, Bangalore Traffic Police.

Also speaking at the event, D Veerendra Heggade said that the country was almost 30 years behind in adopting traffic manners and one of the reasons for this was the lack of awareness in the public.

“There are many boards telling you what not to do but not enough telling you what should be done,” he said making a case for more awareness campaigns.

Police Commissioner B G Jyothiprakash Mirji said that another way of ensuring that Ambulances found right of way was installing sensors in the vehicles which could automatically activate traffic signals.

“It’s not that people do not want to let the ambulance pass, they just want to stay in front of it to save time, this is the mindset we have to change,” Mirji said.
