Karnataka bandh came as handy for the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities to clean stinking Krishna Rajendra Market (KR Market), one of the oldest and biggest markets of Bangalore.
With no footfall on Saturday, following closure of all shops and business inside the market, the BBMP undertook the massive cleaning of the market premises.
Speaking to Express, L Nagaraj, BBMP DC (Market) said that there are 1,812 shops in K R Market. On normal days, 32 pourakarmikas sweep and clean the market.
But on Saturday, more than 100 pourakarmikas were engaged in cleaning the market and it took a couple of hours for them to complete the task. “As there was no business and no public, it became easy for us to clean,” he said.
Further the BBMP official sources said, vendors who had shut their shops, also extended help in the cleaning work. “More than 80 tonnes of garbage was lifted, most of it was wet waste,” official said.
Nagaraj explained that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike is planning to shut the entire market once a month to take up cleaning. “We will discuss this same with the vendors,” he added. There are four gates for KR Market, of which three are under repair. “We will get it fixed and once all the four gates are in a proper condition, we can shut it completely once a month for shoppers or vendors,” he said
