The police said it was the curiosity of Girish, the prime accused in the gang-rape of the student of National Law School of India University (NLISU), gave them the clue.
“As we visited the crime spot several times, Girish kept on watching us and was trying to know what exactly we were doing. He was also trying to see what statements we recorded from the victims. His over-involvement in our work made us doubt him,” a police source said.
“When we checked his background, we found that he was a PUC dropout and was running a shop selling SIM cards. He had plans to open a mobile showroom and his parents had denied him any money. Then, we picked him up for questioning and he spilled the beans.”
The other accused have been identified as painters Jaki alias Hanumantharayappa (25) and Nagesh alias Naga (23), Prasanna alias Appi (21), Sanjay (31), Shiva alias Shivakumar (20), Vishwa alias Vishwanatha (21), S Kiran (20).
Ramanagaram SP Anupam Agrawal said, “The accused are not really close. They came together for the crime. We are investigating whether they have criminal backgrounds.”
The police have recovered six mobile phones, a gold chain and an LCD TV robbed from the women, and seized a toy pistol, a sword and a Maruti Omni.
