The evening of life always has an emotional setting; staring at little bit of what is left of life and reminiscing the numerous years that have gone by.

And at this time of one's life, it is often loneliness and absence of care that abounds many lives.

But there are certain people who have come up with concepts to make the setting a tad bit lively, and India Home Health Care (IHHC) is one among them.

IHHC came in to existence in Chennai and was formed by V Thyagarajan in 2009 and later replicated in Bangalore in 2011.

"Thyagarajan was prompted to start this nightingale job when he was looking for a caretaker for his friend's mother-in-law who was recovering from a disease. Though he got numerous agencies providing services, he was not happy with the operating system and patient's safety.

His wanted to organised the processes and that is how IHHC came to life," said Dr Anitha Arockiasamy, head of clinical operations at IHHC for Bangalore and Chennai.

Being one of the first company who were able to give people, quality care in their homes, IHHC has certain protocols and strategies while hiring good nurses.

"We mainly enrol qualified, registered and associate nurses. Registered nurses takes care of all the clinical procedures while associate nurses will only provide basic dressing. Apart from this, we have medical care takers who help old age people with emotional support and companionship," explained Anitha.

IHHC started with 10 people in Bangalore and now has around 200 nurses, who have catered to almost 1200 patients till today.

"We used to hire freelancers but could not maintain them in the long run. So we started hiring on payrolls.

"The registered nurses mainly take care of patients who are suffering from chronic diseases and requires medical care and monitoring consistently.

We have lot of people who enquire about looking after patients with neuro problems, dementia, Alzheimer, stroke, ortho, cardio and diabetics. They want skilled caretakers who can help in administering them in their medical services and give company to the lonely heart," she said.

The highlight about IHHC is that they provide staff 24/7.

"We also provide livein staff. We have one staff working from 8 am to 8 pm and the next staff continues from 8 pm to 8 am. They don't continuously stay at one place," said Anitha.

Mentioning about the safety measures that will taken care from each side before nurses are sent to the respective houses, Anitha said, "We have a verification process monitored by a senior nurse, who accompanies the nurse in the beginning.

We have male staff for male patients and female staff to female patients. Physical check of working environment conditions is done and in case, for example, there are four males and one female in the house, then we usually turn down the request.

Our nurses only travel by bus so timings is very important. We also have foolproof check on a weekly basis by our operations team.

We take between Rs 500/- and Rs 950/- per nurse, per shift depending on the conditions of the patients.”
