Letting imagination run wild

Imagination 2013, the annual design awards show, organised by J D Institute of Fashion Technology was held at Chancery Pavilion on Thursday. The show served as a platform for graduating students to showcase their talent as well as get an exposure to the fashion fraternity and the public. This year’s theme was Imagination 2013 - Unfollow, allowing students a free rein on their creativity, using a combination of colour, fabric and innovative design.

While Akila Dixit, one of the Diploma students, was breaking all conventional use of borders, Poornima Nair, another diploma student, attempted to merge royal wear and unisex clothing together.  On being asked about what she thought of the current fashion scene in Bangalore, Varsha Sujani, another diploma student, said “Bangalore’s fashion sense is definitely good but I would say it is still in its evolving stages. I usually keep up with the latest trends online or via magazines.”

Nineteen such students defied common conventions and gave the audience and judges a breathtaking show on that glamorous evening. While the audience consisted  mostly of their families, the judges' table included Meera Jairam, visual merchandiser; Aparna Srivastava, fashion designer, Kishore Ramachandra, fashion photographer and Pramod Adhikari, entrepreneur. Nealesh Dalal, Managing Trustee of the JD Institute, said, “I believe Indians are strong contenders in the field of fashion as designers. We try to provide the necessary training to our students, and this Annual Awards Show is taking it a step further by encouraging their creativity.”

When Poornima was asked if she was nervous, she confidently replied, “Not at all. Our professors help us prepare and oversee everything beforehand to ensure that we are ready for the show. Moreover, this has been happening for 25 years now, since the institute’s inception. So we were quite confident.”
