The six-yard wonder

A sari needs no introduction. It remains elegant as ever, accentuating a woman’s beauty and grace. Even after so many decades, actresses rely on this Indian attire when representing the country on international platforms. One prominent example would be of Sonam Kapoor at Cannes 2013. She wore a decidedly old world white and gold sari, but took it to another level with the embroidered jacket. Or how about the movie Lootera, in which Sonakshi Sinha changes nine saris in a two-and-a-half minute song. This movie shows her looking very old school in some breathtakingly elegant saris. And who can forget the iconic Vidya Balan, whose trademark style to grace every occasion is with a beautiful sari? Dia Mirza, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif.. The list goes on. Bollywood’s beauties certainly grab the spotlight when they turn up in saris. So while the sari is being reinvented in ways we could not have fathomed before, here are a few ideas for add-ons with your sari, to make sure you stand out.

Wear a heavy silk churidar instead of a petticoat, probably with embroidered zari cuffs. You can top it off with a light chiffon sari.

Wear a nice, embroidered, fitted overcoat. Similar to the one Sonam Kapoor wore at Cannes, it highlighted her shoulders beautifully.

However, we would not advise you to wear a jacket like the one Aishwarya Rai Bacchan wore at the last Cannes festival, as it did nothing for her figure.

When it comes to accessories, traditional is the way to go. A simple sari can be made exquisite with large chunky bangles, earrings and maybe even a necklace. However, be careful not to overdo it.

Whoever said waist-belts are only for jeans was mistaken. It is now being used with saris for a unique and trendy look as well. And no, not the usual kamarbandh, although that does highlight a woman’s waist beautifully.

Wearing a blazer, yes a blazer, with a sari might seem unconventional but it is yet another trend that has hit the ramps this season.
