One more lake on the hit list

In the wake of continuing criticism from environmentalists, naturalists and ornithologists, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) are making efforts to revive the Agara lake but have no clear idea on how to restore it. Recently, citizens, from all walks of life, from the vicinity of the lake joined hands to clean the lake and spread awareness among other residents on the importance of this lung space, encroachment of the lake and also to draw the attention of the authorities for its restoration.

The lake which is located between Koramangala and H S R Layout was once a pristine picturesque lake. The greenery in the surroundings and the flocking of large number of migratory birds made a valuable addition to the depleting green sink in the city.

Increasing population and the constant addition of urban structures has posed a severe threat to the lake.  In order to restore the lake, citizens cleared weeds and floating plastics. “The authorities have not taken any steps to rejuvenate the stinking water body. The sewage water let into the lake, encroachment by apartments and other dwellings and also construction of buildings on the Raja Kaluve (main channel) itself has led to the its deterioration.

To spread awareness about the same and also to protect this natures’ gift, we undertook this project,” said Chandramouli (name changed), a resident and participant in the cleansing activity of the lake.

Meanwhile, enthusiastic residents were seen collecting construction debris and garbage from the lake in huge bags.

Armed with gloves, they cleared the floating plastic and thereby, over 70 bags of plastic was collected from the lake. They further cleared the litter on the walking track.

Speaking about her experiences during her evening walks, Anitha, a resident said, “Though a path for morning walkers has been constructed beautifully, it is not well-maintained by the authorities. Also, we are scared to walk during the evenings because of  anti-social elements who frequent the vicinity of the lake.”

However, Corporator K Latha, failed to take part in this drive, although she was invited, showing her disinterest and sheer negligence towards the rejuvenation programme.

Despite repeated calls, the corporator failed to respond.
