A businessman fired in the air with his revolver to chase away a seven-member gang who attempted a daylight robbery at his house on Coles Road in Pulakeshinagar on Sunday.

Police arrested Wilson, Alexander, Ramesh, Arasu and Cheluvaraju, while two others managed to escape. All are aged between 30 and 35.

Police reconstructed the incident, which took place on Sunday afternoon at the house of Shafiq Zia Ur-Rehaman, a cloth merchant on Commercial Street.

Rehaman’s friend Ashley Warden, had purchased land from Munimaran in Salem in Tamil Nadu.

Warden, a resident of Kammanahalli, asked Munimaran to come and collect an advance of `21 lakh. Munimaran’s son Appi, who learnt about this, called Warden and discussed the advance.

Warden asked Appi to come to Rehaman’s house to collect it.

Around 12.30 pm, Appi along with two of his friends went to Rehaman’s house and confirmed that Warden had come along with the money.

After discussing the land deal, Appi went back without taking the money on the pretext of meeting some of his friends urgently.

After a while, Appi allegedly sent a gang of seven people to Rehaman’s house to rob the money, instead of completing the land deal. The gang, who came in a car, entered Rehaman’s house and asked them to hand over the money by threatening them with a knife.

Rehaman managed to take out his licensed revolver and fired twice in the air. Fearing their lives, the gang managed to escape.

But Rehaman raised an alarm and succeeded in nabbing five of the accused with the help of his neighbours.

The Pulakeshinagar police are investigating and are on the look out for Appi and the two absconding accused.
