In this section, a brief overview of the more common entities that inhabit the mental plane has been undertaken. One important difference between the entities inhabiting the mental plane and those on the astral plane is that the products of evil passion cannot exist on the mental plane. As a result the sub-divisions are far fewer than in the case of astral entities. Some of the common entities belonging to the mental plane are -
Highly spiritually advanced humans still living in the physical body : Certain highly spiritually advanced human beings who while still present in the physical body and living on earth, are able to move in full consciousness on the mental plane. These are either adepts or their initiated pupils. Until one has been taught by one’s master how to use one’s mental body, it will be difficult to move with freedom even upon its lower levels. One question which comes to mind is related to travel to the mental plane while still on the physical plane. In very high and altered states of meditation, cosmic currents arise and travel via the spinal cord through the nerves to the brain, where they fall as cosmic irradiations. These currents travel to higher centres in the brain namely the Pituitary, Thalamus, Hypothalamus and the Pineal glands, which is the highest gland or centre. When the cosmic currents reach the Pineal gland then contact with entities of the mental plane and travel in it is possible. Adepts and Initiates appear as splendid globes of living colour, driving away all evil influence wherever they go. It is here in the mental world that most of their important work is done, particularly on the higher levels, where it is possible to act directly on the individuality or the ego. It is from this plane that they are able to shower the highest spiritual influences upon the world of thought and also initiate great movements of all kinds. Here also, direct teaching is given to those who are sufficiently advanced to receive it, as it is possible to impart it far more readily here as compared to the astral plane. They also have a great field of work in connection with those whom we term as the dead. Adepts or masters for the most part of their work generally reside on the highest level of the mental plane.
In order to gain a better understanding of the conditions of the mental plane and its inhabitants, it is essential to know those who are not present on the plane.
The characteristics of the mental plane being unselfishness and spirituality, it follows that the black magician and his pupils can find no place there.
In spite of the fact that in many of them the intellect is very highly developed, and consequently the matter of their mental bodies is extremely active and sensitive along certain lines, yet in every case those lines are connected with personal desire of some sort.
They can, therefore find expression only through that lower part of the mental body, which is inextricably entangled with astral matter. As a consequence of this limitation, their activities are practically confined to the astral and physical planes. One whose whole life has been evil and selfish, may have periods of purely abstract thought during which one may utilise one’s mental body, provided one knows how to do so. One might therefore say that an ordinary human could function on the mental plane only if one forgot about one’s evil and selfish motives. For ordinary people during sleep or for psychically developed persons in trance, to penetrate the mental plane is possible though extremely rare. Purity of life and purpose are absolute pre-requisites to enter this plane.
The ordinary human after death: This class comprises persons in varying degrees and conditions of consciousness found on the various sub-planes of the mental plane, as described in some detail in the previous section of this chapter.
