This year’s Lakme Fashion Week, which will be held in Mumbai from March 22-26, will showcase the creation of two Bangaloreans, Pallavi Foley and Javed Khan, among others.

Excited about her participation at the national level show, Pallavi said, “I am thrilled and looking forward to showcase my collection, ‘Within’, which is strongly based on emotions and being yourself. The Fashion Week is a great platform for a designer to express what they have in mind.”

Pallavi will be working with precious metals like gold,  diamond and various colour stones. “Precious metals are a strong medium of expression. It makes a statement and expresses a lot about you. This collection represents the many levels and layers that make each one of us who we are. Structurally, modern sculptures and geometric spaces form the architecture of the line. As the details of the piece unfold, the uniquely juxtaposed elements offer a striking yet balanced visual treat. The play of colour, adds yet another dimension to this interplay,” she said.

Commenting on the new breed of designers from Bangalore, Pallavi opined, “In design terms, Bangalore is a sensitive market. But designers from other states look forward to what we are showcasing. A lot of them wait to see as they think it is different.”

As for Javed, he is participating for the second time at the Lakme Fashion Week.

“My first appearance was in the Gen X category. Only if we do well then we will graduate to the next level. This time I will be going as an emerging designer. It is nice as it is not easy to get into such shows,” said Javed adding, “I did not take part in any fashion shows for nearly 18 months as I did not get a strong concept. I can’t get inspired every six months and I can’t create designs forcefully. If I actually come out with something, it has to be substantial,” he said.

For Javed, Bangalore is not a designer city. He says, “Bangalore doesn’t have a heritage like Hyderabad or Delhi. Bangalore is very smart and have quite a lot of self-made people. They spend more on what is real and what they think is substantial. But as designers we get the same respect like other designers all over the country.”
