These footpaths are meant for walking

Most of the pedestrians are forced to walk on roads thanks to uneven slabs, poor maintenance and waste dumped on footpaths and the latest area to bear the brunt of all these issues is Jayanagar 4th block, 11th Main Road.

Despite several complaints and campaigns, the condition of footpaths in the city is deteriorating every day.

Most of the pedestrians are forced to walk on roads thanks to uneven slabs, poor maintenance and waste dumped on footpaths. And, the latest area to bear the brunt of all these issues is Jayanagar 4th block, 11th Main Road.

There is absolutely no space for pedestrians here. Moreover, the uneven width of the footpaths here is alarming to say the least.

It comes as no surprise that people prefer walking on the streets. In fact, on this particular stretch of road, there’s a building that is still under construction. As a result, a lot of construction debris is dumped on the footpaths.

Poornashree, a student, said, “Dumping waste on footpaths has become a huge inconvenience for all. I use this road everyday and I have observed that in some places the footpaths are either missing or have garbage dumped on them. I hope the authorities step up and do something about the situation. Apart from renovation, it is also important to maintain these footpaths.”

Echoing similar sentiments, B Ramesh, a resident, said, “It baffles me that no attention is paid to the state of the footpaths here. We pedestrians must forcefully walk on the roads putting our lives at risk all the time.”

When these issues were brought to the notice of the corporator, C K Ramamurthy,  he said, “Several buildings  are being constructed in the area and that is the main reason why people are facing a lot of problems. We try to keep the footpaths clean as much as possible.”
