On the occasion of Sir CV Raman’s birthday, Raman Research Institute organised a special event at the institute for the children of Kautilya Vidyalaya from Mysore.

A ritual followed by the institute every year, a batch of children of the  14-15 years age group of a particular school spend a day at the institute.

Since Raman was fond of children, in his memory the legacy has continued.

The day kicked off with the students gathering in the auditorium to hear lectures from Ph D scholars, who enlightened them on varied aspects of physics and chemistry.

They spoke about the state of matter, mass of substances, reflection and refraction.

It built a lot of curiosity among the children, instigating them to ask questions.

After lunch, the children toured the museum set up by Raman himself, single-handedly.

They were shown the precious stones and minerals like diamond, pearl, jade, sapphire and many more which were brought in there from different parts of the world, each having immense value in Mineralogy.

Children were also able to explore the room consisting neon-coloured stones; the colour is invisible to the naked eye and requires to be seen in a special kind of UV light which brings out the colour of the stones.

After the short tour of the museum, the children were given a memento each.

Speaking about the event, Public relation officer SR Ram said, “These children were enthusiastic during the entire session and asked numerous questions which is exactly what we expect from the visiting schools.”
