BANGALORE: Here is good news for Bangaloreans complaining about the increase in vegetable prices. The last three days have seen prices come down drastically.

At Russell Market, a kg of cauliflower now costs Rs 30, which earlier cost Rs 50. The revised rate for a kg of beans is Rs 50, reduced by Rs 30.  Brinjal, priced at Rs 60 per kg earlier, now costs Rs 30. Onion too costs Rs 30 per kg at present. The  price of green peas has decreased from Rs 120 per kg to Rs 80.

Prices of greens have reduced by half. A bunch of spinach now costs Rs 6 and a coriander bunch Rs 10, which was earlier priced at Rs 25.

Mohammed Idris Choudhury, general secretary, Russell Market Merchants’ Association, told Express that the fall in prices was unexpected. Good rains in the last month have resulted in better yields and demand for many vegetables reduced in the last few days, vendors said.  According to Idris, many farmers are now selling their vegetables in the city, which was earlier taken to markets outside the state.

Mohsin, a vegetable wholeseller at Russell Market, said the fall in prices mirrors reduced demand but added that vegetables may cost more around Ganesh Chaturthi.
