Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is among those budding actresses who, in spite of having made her debut in Kollywood with Podaa Podi, are keen to work in Sandalwood. All excited about her Kannada debut, Maanikya, Varalaxmi was at her energetic best at a recent press conference to promote her film. And she looked gorgeous with her warm disposition and dazzling smile.

According to the actress, a debut in Sandalwood took time, but there were no regrets. She says, “Everything has a right time. And being a part of Maanikya, my only problem was with the language. Working in a different language film, you tend to go in for more takes but the crew was amazingly supportive. The whole unit became a big family and by the end of the shoot, I could even understand Kannada.”

Her father R Sarathkumar is a well-known face in Kannada industry, so even though Varalaxmi is new to Bangalore or Karnataka, her bond with city has deep roots. “I am a Bangalorean because I was born here. My mother belongs here and lot of her family stays in the city. I have grown in Bangalore though I spent my early years in Chennai. Before, it used to be a two-day trip, but now I have stayed for much longer because of the shoot. Probably if I act  in more movies, I might learn Kannada and dub myself,” she says

Working with a new team, Varalaxmi stated that the entire unit was very professional. “Everything was well organised. In fact, I liked the way Sudeep handled the movie. Earlier, I was told that he is very stern, but when I met him, he was totally different and I felt comfortable. He knew what he wanted and tried to get it out from all the actors. He never lost his temper on the sets and was very patient with everybody. Now, it is left to the audience. After that, I will choose to do more films in Kannada. I would love to work opposite Darshan and Puneeth Rajkumar,” she says.

But that will take some time, it seems. The actress has decided to give her best to her next project with Bala, which is based on the Karagattam dance form in which Sasikumar plays the lead and Ilayaraja is scoring the music. “I will be occupied for a long time and only after completing his film will I decide on my next,” she says.

“I am happy with the space I occupy in filmdom currently and I will continue to deliver my best to all my projects,” she signs off.
