BENGALURU: If you have any streetlight- related problems in your area, help is at hand. BBMP Commissioner G Kumar Naik said on Saturday after an inspection that people can send text messages to 9480685700 regarding streetlight problems in their area on or before December 30.
The commissioner also said they can call 080-22660000 and indicate the location and problem with the streetlights. A release from the BBMP added that Naik has ordered for a streetlight inspection across all 198 wards. “We have constituted 298 teams to inspect the streetlights on December 30 throughout the night, across the city,” Naik said. As many as 27 senior officials, one from each assembly constituency, have been deputed for overall in-charge.
Naik has asked the official team to send him details like how many streetlights were functioning in the wards, whether the illumination is satisfactory and how much penalty has been levied against electrical contractors, the release said.
In May this year, when T M Vijay Bhaskar was the BBMP administrator, a similar inspection was conducted. In just five zones, over 12,000 streetlights were found to be not working. Bengaluru has close to 4.59 lakh streetlights, which are maintained by electrical contractors.
“As many as 127 packages have been given to electrical contractors in all 198 wards. Once inspection is over, we will deduct penalty amounts when clearing the next bills,” a senior official said.
When contacted, Kumar Naik said such inspections should be done at least once in three months for comprehensive data of streetlights. Despite regular checks, there are some dark areas which need to be monitored. “In the coming days, we will conduct inspection of public toilets, parks and other utilities,” he said.
