BENGALURU: Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) launched trial runs of a UD-Volvo bus service on Saturday. Transport Minister R Ramalinga Reddy launched the new service at the BMTC Central office.

The new service will be operated on a trial basis on route No:342F from Kempegowda Bus Station to Sarjapur.

A BMTC release said this is the first time in India that a transport utility is introducing a UD 650 mm floor, AC bus. These buses are more capable and are passenger- and environment-friendly too. The UD SLF is a semi-low floor city bus specifically designed to meet the needs of passengers, driver comfort and operating efficiency.

Specifics

The 12 metre-long bus is powered by a 230 hp 8-litre 6-cylinder modern Euro IV diesel engine with a turbocharger and intercooler. Safety is given the utmost priority in these buses. These buses will have only one step each in the front and middle doors so that passengers, including the physically challenged, can easily enter and alight the bus.

BMTC has a fleet of 6,473 buses operating 79,000 trips every day.
