BENGALURU: Sachin Bhat, a resident of Bengaluru, made the city proud by receiving the prestigious President of India Gold Medal among the students of Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, on October 31 at the 3rd convocation of the institute. Bhat said, “Most students think they have achieved success just by clearing the entrance exam of a prestigious institute, but the real test of intellect in an engineering college starts after the entrance. It is not only about academics, but a student should explore all skills during college days to be successful in the real sense.”
Sachin also won the Institute’s silver medal for being the topper in Computer Science and Engineering. Besides academics, Bhat was the Academy Secretary and also a member of the Senate of the institute, which he said helped him to hone up his leadership skills.
The President Medal is meant for outstanding students of IIT and one medal is awarded per institute. Bhat was the lone pursuant from Karnataka who clinched the Award at IIT Mandi. His contribution to Apache Flink, a big data platform and his own innovative design of low-cost 3D Printer attained state-wide fame. Talking to the Express, Bhat said, “The field of technology is fast evolving. Before taking up the subject, a student of computer science should consider well. One should not think about colleges but concentrate on the course and course material.”
There are fields like computer architecture which are near saturation and there are new fields like big-data analysis and machine-learning, which have a lot of opportunities and scope for a Computer Science student. He has completed two terms of internship with the Indian Institute of Science and two internships with Amazon. He is presently a developer at Amazon Bengaluru. At the end of the day, Bhat attributes his success to the unstinted support and appreciation from his parents and professors.
