QUEEN'S ROAD: M P Jagruth, 10, is the bright new karate hope after winning a series of events in the recent past.

A 4th standard student of the Indian Public School, he has made Bengaluru proud by winning the gold medal at the KAI sub-junior (under 10 category) National karate championship 2015 held at Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi in September.

The KAI sub-junior championship was organised by the Karate Association of India (recognised by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports). As such, Jagruth has done well both in organised competitions and ordinary events run by private bodies. The boy’s passion for karate comes from viewing a number of karate-based movies and they inspired him to take to the sport.

The year 2015 has been particularly great for the youngster. In the 7th Karnataka Sub-Junior Karate Championship in August in the city, he won the kata and kumite category golds. Representing the state, he won the gold at the nationals. Jagruth also won the kata gold in the Commonwealth Karate Championship - 2015 held by the Commonwealth Karate Federation in September at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi.

Jagruth has thus won many laurels and awards at a very young age. He has won medals at Shihan Bonnie Roberts Memorial National Karate championship 2012, International Invitational Open Karate Championship in 2012 and the sixth state level Dasara Karate Championship. He has also represented Karnataka in Hyderabad at the sixth South-India Gymnastics championship in 2013.

It all began for him in the 6th state-level Dasara karate championship in 2012 in Mysore where he came away with the kata gold. Soon after he also hit the gold pot in the International Invitational Open Karate Championship in Bengaluru.

There has been no looking back for Jagruth and he has more than lived up to his name and awakened interest in a large number of kids. That in itself is a shot in the arm for karate.

Jagruth’s mentors say that he is very focused and determined which are key to his success. Incidentally, Jagruth loves ferocious dogs and practices karate twice a day though he never misses out on studies. Surely, more young talents will emulate him in the days to come.
