BENGALURU:The Bull Temple on Basavanagudi Road, which is also a historical monument, has remained neglected and in poor condition for a long time. However, on Saturday the temple wore a different look. The walls had a fresh coat of paint and the pavements nearby were squeaky clean. All thanks to the efforts of the residents.
Prathibimba Trust and The Bangalore District Chemists and Druggists Association started the ‘Save Indian Heritage’ — an initiative by the city-based organisations to protect and clean heritage monuments.
The temple was their first project.
Ready for Kadalekai Parishe
The initiative came just days before the annual Kadalekai Parishe (groundnut festival), when the temple premises become a hub of temporary shops.
The organisation members started cleaning around 8 am on Saturday. Retired professor M N Suresh Moona inaugurated the campaign. It only took the enthusiasts an hour to give the area a clean look.
Twenty-five members of the association and 20 members of the trust joined hands for the cause. Most of the participants, mostly youngsters, were from the corporate sector.
Besides the morning walkers and devotees, even the BBMP garbage collectors looked pleased as their work for the day in the area was taken care of.
Founder president of the trust, Murali, who is a project manager at IBM, told Express, “Residents in every area should have a forum and do their bit. It can be called a resident social responsibility. You don’t need much of BBMP’s help if we dispose the garbage and keep our roads clean.”
“We are going to do such cleaning campaigns in other parts of the city in the coming days. It is important to preserve the historical monuments so that we can pass it on to the next generation,” he said.
