JC NAGAR: When the students of a government school at Matadahalli arrived for classes on Wednesday morning, little did they know that they would be given an unexpected holiday.

In the early hours of the day, a huge heap of garbage dumped next to the school was set afire, leaving the whole area in smoke.

During the Dasara celebrations last week, several stalls were set up outside the school. Trash from these stalls was dumped on the side and many visitors even defecated behind the school. The stench and the smoke prompted the school authorities to call off all classes for the day.

Headmaster Venkatamma said the students have been instructed to remain at home till the grounds are cleaned. The school has  lodged a complaint with the Block Education Officer.

BEO Ramesh said the local corporator has been asked to ensure that the school premises are cleaned by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike at the earliest.
