BENGALURU: For the first time in the history of Bangalore University, two government colleges have received the autonomous status. The university granted the autonomous status to VHD Home Science College and Government Science College, Nrupatunga Road, recently.
After almost a year-long process of inspection and other procedures, the university granted the status to these colleges a few weeks ago based on the green signal given by the University Grants Commission (UGC). These colleges can now function as mini-universities and will have the freedom to frame their own syllabus, conduct examinations and announce results.
The colleges had applied for the status almost a year ago, and after conducting inspection and sending reports to UGC, the university granted it now. “Not only will these colleges have autonomy to conduct exams and announce results, they must conduct the admission process for students too, which is a bit challenging,” an official at Bangalore University said.
Authorities of the university acknowldeged the fact that these government colleges got the status by proving their excellence in academics. “So far there were only private colleges in the list of autonomous ones and now we are proud that even government colleges have managed to get the status by proving excellence in academics,” a university official said. According to UGC norms, the concept of giving autonomous status to individual colleges has been introduced to increase the quality of higher education. These two institutions will get `2 crore assistance.
Autonomous bodies
There are over 11 private colleges affiliated to the Bangalore University that have received the autonomous status. The list includes Mount Carmel College, NMKRV College for Women, St Joseph’s College of Arts and Commerce, National College and CMR College.
