BENGALURU: While playing outside on a sunny day during their vacation in Banshankari, Ishan, Azaan, Kshitij and Anvay did something admirable. The four boys, on Friday, came across a street dog which had been run over by a bike and had injured its leg.

medical attention

The boys immediately took the dog into one of their homes and gave it basic first aid before further help could arrive.
Eight-year-old Azaan says, “We didn’t have any medicines, so we got an antiseptic cream from our neighbour and applied it on its paw. We then asked our parents to call a doctor, who came and tied a bandage around the dog’s leg”.

The kids have named the dog Blackie and hopes he will make their neighbourhood his home.  Blackie seems to have already, sleeping outside their houses in turns.

“The dog is now better, we feed it milk and biscuits and it seems healthy”, says, Ishan, Azaad’s brother. Were they afraid of the stray, of being bitten? “The dog was in so much pain, we simply had to do something to help” says Azaan. “We just went ahead and did what was needed, we didn’t think of anything else.”

The accident had crushed Blackie’s left hind leg and has left nothing of the paw. The boys say that they are sad to see him limping on three legs and are hoping to see Blackie make a complete recovery soon.

After the children had done the first aid, their parents called a known animal-rescuer Arun Prasad for help. He cleaned the wound, applied an antiseptic cream and used an anti-tick spray on Blackie. After bandaging the wound, Arun also left a strip of antibiotic tablets to be given to the dog.

Arun says, “I was so moved by the compassion these young kids showed by rescuing the injured dog.” He wishes other children too would also follow their example.

Arun says that that the children acted in time and Blackie is making a speedy recovery. “He should be better in three months,” says Arun.
