BENGALURU: In yet another case of stress and depression claiming young lives, a 13-year-old boy hanged himself at his home in Sampangiram Nagar in Bengaluru on Monday evening.

The reason behind the extreme step was not clear.

Police said Praveen Raj, son of Anand Kumar a private company employee and Deepa a saree shop owner, returned from his grandmother’s place on Monday. He then went out with friends to immerse a Ganesha idol, leaving a note to his parents that he would be late.

When he returned home in the evening, his parents were still away at work. On getting back at around 9.30 pm, they found Praveen's body hanging.

The shell-shocked couple told the police they have no idea why their son decided to kill himself.

Police said Praveen’s body has been taken to Victoria Hospital. A complaint has been registered.

Teen suicides in south India have been causing concern for many years. A study by Lancet in 2012 found that India’s suicide rate in the 15-29 age group is the highest in the world. According to the World Health Organization report, India’s suicide rate in the 15-to-29 age group stood at 35.5 per 100,000 people.
