Karnataka HC sets deadline to commence construction of flats for 1,512 families in Ejipura

BENGALURU: Taking note of the plight of 1,512 families belonging to Economically Weaker Section (EWS), the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike to sanction a plan within three weeks to construct flats for them as per the rehabilitation project at Ejipura in Koramangala.

The court said that Maverick Holding and Investment Private Limited Company should start construction within two weeks of BBMP sanctioning the plan.
A division bench of Justices Jayant Patel and N K Sudhindra Rao were hearing the contempt petition filed by EWS Residents Welfare Association against N Manjunath Prasad, Commissioner of BBMP, and Uday Garudachar, Managing Director, Maverick Company.

The association accused the BBMP and Maverick Company of not complying with the high court directions issued while disposing of a public interest litigation on August 24, 2012 in relation to the rehabilitation of 1,512 families who were uprooted from Ejipura in 2003 as their quarters were in a dilapidated condition.

The bench said that as the BBMP Commissioner had assessed the development charge at `7,39,35,500 for the purpose of sanctioning the plan, to be paid by Maverick Company, the latter was at liberty to pay 50 per cent of the amount by cheque/draft.

The bench said that Maverick Company shall deposit the remaining 50 per cent with the BBMP within one month from the date of passing of the final order. After that, BBMP shall sanction the plan by issuance of the commencement certificate. The company shall begin construction of flats within two weeks from the approval of the plan, the bench ordered.
