Work your voice in a ‘gym’, to perfect that pitch

Vocalist, who has trained reality star singers, to hold voice-culturing workshop

BENGALURU: Suchethan Rangaswamy, an electrical engineering graduate, wasn’t keen on pursuing that as a career. He has always been passionate about music, and says, "We need to have a profession that fills our heart more than our pockets."

Working as a professor in performing arts wing of Alliance University, he is now pursuing his PhD in voice-culturing techniques; perhaps the first musician to attempt a doctorate in this stream.
Hailing from a family of musicians, Suchethan learnt Carnatic classical music from veterans such as Dr Sarvamangala Shankar, MS Vidya and Dr P Rama for almost eight years and then from Dr RK Srikanthan and P Unnikrishnan.

The vocalist is also well-versed with veena and took lessons from Dr Suma Sudheendra. His acting talent in daily soaps such as ‘Mukta Mukta’, ‘Naagini’, ‘Chitralekha’, ‘Puttagouri Maduve’ and so on have fetched him much appreciation.
He is a mentor on Zee Kannada Saregamapa and has guided Aishwarya Rangarajan, Chennappa Huddar, Tanish Raj, Anvita, Ashwin, Ohileshwari, Supreet Phalgun, Sanjth Hegde and  Ajay Bharadhwaj among others.

To help singers, professors, teachers or people who use their voice extensively, Suchethan will be introducing voice-culturing techniques at a workshop 'Voice Gym'. The event, on August 13, is being organised by Thrayi.

This is to improve the quality of your voice and lessons will be tailored to suit each person's sruthi or pitch, depth and tonal quality. The promise is that any singer can touch a high-pitch without straining their vocal chords.

The workshop will also discuss how to learn a new composition and how best to present it, and how to improve the quality of your singing and preserve your voice.
