Dr Shetty bats for online healthcare

Renowned cardiac surgeon and entrepreneur Dr Devi Shetty spoke of how data and technology were changing the way healthcare was being delivered, especially through data visualisation.

BENGALURU: Renowned cardiac surgeon and entrepreneur Dr Devi Shetty spoke of how data and technology were changing the way healthcare was being delivered, especially through data visualisation from hand-held devices, here on Saturday at IIMBue.Dr Shetty presented several statistics to make a case for use of digital healthcare, and gave examples of how software had helped doctors, including himself, treat patients better.

At the very onset, Dr Shetty, Managing Director of Narayana Hrudayalaya, made his stand clear saying, “In five years, smart software will carry out smarter diagnosis than doctors. In 10 years, doctors will be legally mandated to take a second opinion from a software.”

He stressed that such a scenario would not diminish the importance of doctors, but will prevent doctors from making mistakes.Dr Shetty said he was able to carry out ‘ICU rounds,’ ie, check conditions of patients from anywhere in the world through a software on his phone, and this once helped him save a patient though he was in a different city.
