BENGALURU: Yelahanka New Town police on Monday arrested seven members of a restaurant, including a security guard, on charges of assaulting a police constable who forced them to close the restaurant at 1 am on Monday.

The arrested are identified as Azil Ahamed, Faizal M, Majid Khan, Zunaid, Shamsheer, Fayaz and Faizal Navab, who work in the restaurant.

The police officer said that the constable Sadashiva was on night rounds in mufti and noticed that customers at the Kitchen-6 — a family restaurant — were making noise. Sadashiva, who came on a bike, told them to close the restaurant as it was 1 am. The staff refused to close the restaurant and started arguing with him. When Sadashiva went to pull down the shutter, the angry staff assaulted him while the security guard Shamsheer pushed him out of the premise.

Meanwhile, Sadashiva alerted Hoysala personnel who rushed to the spot and arrested the accused. They were handed over to judicial custody and the police have obtained CCTV footage as part of the investigation.

It is learnt that residents of the area have earlier complained to the police on several occasions over the restaurant being kept open till midnight, creating noise and causing nuisance. But, police had failed to take action. When Sunday night’s incident took place, the police acted swiftly and warned the owner to close the establishment at 11 pm, Mahadev, a resident, said.
